Computer Science is actually am exciting, challenging and dynamic disciple. Every aspect of the present day society somehow incorporate the use of computers. The introduction of new computing technologies occurs at an enormous rate with continual and rapid changes in the development of the Computer Science field.
Your course of study will therefore be up to date and relevant, will be serviced by well qualified staff, and will also be geared to preparing you for life and employment after university.
The department staff aims to help all of our students achieves what they want to in life. As one of our students we expect you to work hard, to set high standards for yourself. To help you to succeed you will have access to excellent staff and facilities, and also to a range of student support services to help deal with your particular needs. Of course, to do this academic, administration and technical staff that you come across as part of your studies will readily advise and support you. Your part is to take your study seriously, to ensure that you set-aside appropriate time for your study, and to make full use of the diverse range of learning opportunities – both in class and directed study outside of classes – provided by your course. It is important to us that you are successful and that you go on to be a good ambassador for the university.
The Department of Computer Science as it is known today started as a programme in the University in 1990. From 1990 through 2009, the Computer Science programme was under the Defunct Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science in the Faculty of Science. It attained a full-fledged Department in 2009. The foundation Dean of the Faculty of Science in 1990 was Professor Olatunde of the Department of Biological Sciences. When in 2009 the Department of Computer Science came into existence, Dr. M. B. Hammawa was made the pioneer Head of Department.
The Department offers B.Sc Degree in Computer Science only but is currently reviewing its curriculum to offer degree in Information Technology and Cyber Security.
The Department offers a Post graduate Diploma programme in Computer Science, but has received approval from Senate to offer M. Sc. And Ph. D. in Computer Science
Inevitably at the start of all study programmes you will be bombarded with a host of well-intentioned information. Some of that information is immediately important to start your studies and make sure that you are in the right place at the right time. Some information you will need later in your course e.g. about assessments, elective but compulsory courses, student association other clubs within the faculty etc. Whilst other information is about the services the University offers generally which you may need to make reference to in the future. We suggest that you get this handbook and keep it for reference and familiarize yourself with the range of information it contains ready for welcome week. This should be the first document of your own archive - get into the habit of using essential documents like module descriptors when the course starts.
The Department of Computer Science strives to produce students that are well grounded in Information and Communication Technology and entrepreneurial minded graduates who are relevant and attend to the demands of the 21st century and can be self-employed and whose skills and knowledge will accelerate human development..
The department aspires to be one of the best Computer Science Department in Nigeria with an established reputation for high quality teaching, research and innovative learning/delivery techniques in ICT and to be in full harmony with its host community as the foundation of its hopes and aspirations.
The philosophy of the Computer Science Department, University of Abuja, is to produce graduates of high academic standard with adequate practical and theoretical background of immediate value to the industry and the nation in general. This will help to meet up with the national goals and objectives of industrialization and self-reliance.
